What are your favorite read-alouds?
So many great read-aloud books out there it's hard to name just a few. I love A Bad Case of Stripes by Shannon, In November by Cynthia Rylant, Stellaluna by Janell Cannon, Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg. The list goes on.
What are your favorite "professional" book?
I'm a big fan of Ralph Fletcher. I've read most of his books. He has picture books for children too! I love Georgia Heard too. Her writing really moves me as well has her ideas. I just purchased Strategies that Work by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis. It came with a down loadable study guide. Any one interested in a study group?
Here is your chance to wax on about yourself, your wonderful class, and more. What makes you tick?
What makes me tick? My daughters bring such joy to my life and remind me to laugh at the little stresses--like when the dinner plate falls on the newly washed floor and Marlee announces, "Accidents happen!" They are the source of my joy and inspiration for my journal writing.
I love to read--especially children's books. The problem is finding time to sit and read!
Three years ago I decided to try something new. I picked up a guitar and took four lesson. Now, I play and sing all the time to my students and my daughters. I discovered that when your determined you can teach an old dog new tricks. I love to play any chance I get.

Hi Lesley...Thank you for joining the site! I was hoping we could attract someone with your library/media specialist background to help get the site off the ground.

Not to push you into the pool too quickly, but if you ever have time, consider sharing lists of books for various units of study. I would be happy to create a new area in the "resources" section for each unit of study.

Once again, welcome!

What is the reading workshop?

Often referred to as reader's workshop, the reading workshop model is a method of teaching reading whereby students often read self-selected texts. The ultimate goal is to give students the skills needed to become independent, lifelong readers.

There are many "gurus" out there who have their own slants on the reading workshop. Perhaps the most famous proponent is Lucy Calkins of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.

The Open Source Reading site does not follow the teachings of a specific guru. Rather, we hope to present a wide array of materials that might be used by anyone who is putting self-selected texts at the forefront of their reading program.
