Here is your chance to wax on about yourself, your wonderful class, and more. What makes you tick?
I am a creative, passionate teacher in need of a "wonderful class" to call my own. I have been an assistant, per-diem sub, and a long-term sub for the past 3 years. My dream job is a 6th grade language arts position in a progressive district. I also love teaching upper elementary grades, and I have no problem with 7th or 8th grade. There's just something about sixth graders that I really dig! I love getting kids turned on to reading great books, and helping them stretch themselves as writers. I've been in schools with workshop and without. Honestly, I feel that a combination method works really well, especially in middle school grades.
Middle school teaching is a job that I find both challenging and rewarding. I get my kicks by turning reluctant English students into enthusiastic readers & passionate writers. The perfect classroom is out there waiting for me!

What is the reading workshop?

Often referred to as reader's workshop, the reading workshop model is a method of teaching reading whereby students often read self-selected texts. The ultimate goal is to give students the skills needed to become independent, lifelong readers.

There are many "gurus" out there who have their own slants on the reading workshop. Perhaps the most famous proponent is Lucy Calkins of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.

The Open Source Reading site does not follow the teachings of a specific guru. Rather, we hope to present a wide array of materials that might be used by anyone who is putting self-selected texts at the forefront of their reading program.
